PRP Therapy

At Upstate Orthopedics, we strive to make our patients' lives better by continuing down the road of innovation and research. We aim to minimize discomfort and enhance longevity, so that you and your family can enjoy everyday life.

Out of the many procedures we offer, one of the most advanced procedures is called platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy. This revolutionary treatment makes it possible to speed up the healing process and relieve pain with a simple injection.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a concentration of platelets separated from your own blood. Platelets are the body’s “first responders” at the site of an injury in the body. They release certain chemicals that can repair some of the damaged parts of your body. An interesting mechanism by which platelets mediate repairing is by enhancing stem cell growth. Stem cells have the potential to differentiate into various types of cells and tissues, i.e., repairing your tissues.

PRP therapy is effective for injuries or conditions that are slow or challenging to heal and has other advantages, like being less risky and less expensive than surgery. Some of the diseases that may be treated using PRP therapy at Upstate Orthopedics include:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Rotator cuff tears
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Ankle sprains
  • ACL tears
  • Tennis elbow
  • Tendonitis
  • Ligament sprains
  • And many more conditions

The procedure is done in our office and only takes about one or two hours from start to finish. After your initial evaluation by our experienced orthopedic physicians, our highly skilled staff will draw some blood from you and put it in a centrifuge to separate the platelet-rich plasma from the other components of the blood. The plasma is then injected directly into the diseased or damaged tissue.

The PRP injection contains a high concentration of platelets delivered exactly where the repair and healing need to occur. Many patients feel better after the first injection, and the results can be increased with subsequent PRP injections. If necessary, you can have up to three therapeutic injections within six months.

PRP therapy can benefit many patients, however, it is most suitable for patients who cannot undergo other surgical procedures due to their age, poor health, or other concerns. Our expert doctors will investigate your case thoroughly to make sure you get the best treatment options.

Some of the key benefits of PRP therapy include:

  • Rapid pain relief
  • Faster healing than surgery
  • Facilitates the regeneration of healthy tissues
  • No down time
  • Less risks than surgery

Although this procedure may not be covered by your insurance, PRP therapy costs much less than surgery, and there is considerably less downtime (being in an inactive state). You will feel better within a week or two after an injection, and the pain relief can last for six months or longer. If you have any questions about the cost of PRP therapy or insurance coverage, feel free to call Upstate Orthopedics at (315) 464-5551.
