MEET DR. SHAHRIAR

Dr. Shahriar is a pediatric orthopaedic surgeon whose specialty is taking care of children with trauma or diseases/syndromes/deformities of the musculoskeletal system. He has undertaken specialized training in order to become an expert on issues particular to pediatric care.

He is responsible for fixing broken bones and dislocated joints in children who have sustained injuries. He has special expertise in pediatric orthopaedic techniques, whether operative or nonoperative, that will ultimately lead to healing and recovery. One of the things that Dr. Shahriar enjoys the most about his job is taking away the initial fear and uncertainty that the family faces when a child sustains an injury. He is the orthopaedic liaison to the Pediatric Trauma Committee at Golisano Children's Hospital, the regional level 1 pediatric trauma center in Central New York.

In addition, Dr. Shahriar takes care of complex disorders and deformities of the spine and both upper and lower extremities, including hips and feet. He has training in the care of specialized disorders, such as Down syndrome, skeletal dysplasia, bone disorders such as osteogenesis imperfecta, connective tissue disorders such as Marfan's, nerve disorders such as Charcot-Marie-Tooth, neurofibromatosis, or neuromuscular syndromes such as cerebral palsy and spina bifida. He is well trained in the Ponseti (nonoperative) method of clubfoot casting. He is also specialized in treating pediatric musculoskeletal infections. He has been trained in advanced techniques such as the use of intraoperative navigation, magnetic growing rods and intramedullary nails, and periacetabular osteotomy for complex hip dysplasia. One of the things that Dr. Shahriar enjoys the most about his job is providing treatments that can improve function beyond what the patient had previously.  He also helps to direct the pediatric motion and gait analysis laboratory at the Institute of Human Performance that can help to guide the treatment of gait disorders.

Dr. Shahriar also teaches doctors who are training to become orthopaedic surgeons in matters of pediatric care. He is involved in the research efforts within the division of Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery.
