Diagnostic Imaging
Upstate Orthopedics is fully equipped on-site with state-of-the-art imaging equipment to help your doctor diagnose and treat a wide range of musculoskeletal problems. Diagnostic imaging, such as X-rays, MRIs, and CT scans, are helpful tools for evaluating muscle, joint, and soft tissue injuries. Some of these tools can also be used in the treatment of certain advanced diseases.
By providing these tests on-site, we can quickly diagnose problems and begin a suitable treatment tailored to your needs.
X-Rays
X-rays are used to evaluate bone fractures, bone health, joint health, and even soft tissue injuries. X-ray is a fast, convenient, and painless procedure, used extensively for the diagnosis of numerous conditions and injuries.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
In orthopedics, MRIs are used to view soft tissue injuries, such as a ligament or tendon injury. These images are usually ordered to further evaluate your problem by seeing the inside of the body.
MRI uses a magnetic field and a sophisticated computer system to give reliable and detailed images of the body. MRI can help provide information for a fast and accurate diagnosis and possibly reduce the need for exploratory surgery or other diagnostic procedures.
MRI is also painless. All you need to do is remain still for a period of time during the procedure. The length of an MRI depends on the size of the area being evaluated. It typically takes about 30 - 60 minutes for a usual MRI scan.
Some people with claustrophobia can feel uneasy during an MRI scan. This is due to the MRI scanner being built like a tunnel, so do tell your doctor if you’re claustrophobic. Also, MRIs are not usually prescribed if you’re pregnant, except in some cases when it is absolutely necessary.
CT Scan
Traditional X-rays use a stationary X-ray machine to create two-dimensional images of a specific area of the body, much like a photograph. During a CT scan or computerized tomography, an X-ray unit rotates around your body and takes cross-sectional 3-D pictures, like slices, of the inside of your body. A computer then integrates these images to show bones and soft tissues with greater detail and clarity than regular X-rays. CT scans are used to visualize injuries to bones and surrounding soft tissues, such as tendons, ligaments, and muscles.
CT scans are also a safe and rapid diagnostic procedure. It is especially helpful when there is trauma to different organs in the body including the bones.
