A simple task such as lifting a box can quickly turn to injury if the lift is not done properly. Save yourself, and your body, by keeping the following Upstate Orthopedics’ SIX tips in mind when you pick things up and put them down.
1) Prepare to lift before you lift. Stand square to the load you are attempting to lift. Stand close to the load with your feet in a stance at least hip-width apart.
2) Bend your knees to lower yourself to the object. Do not bend over with your back.
3) Keep your back upright. When you are ready to lift, keep your chest up, back in neutral, and push through your heels to stand.
4) Move your feet to turn. Do not twist while you are carrying the load, instead, pivot or turn your feet to change position.
5) Set the load down the same way you picked it up! Don’t bend forward from your back, keep an upright posture, and bend your knees as you lower it down.
6) Know your limits. Avoid lifting from the floor if possible and ask for help if the load is too heavy. If you ARE lifting with a partner, still follow the above tips – and guide your partner as well!
