Dr. Kenneth Mann, PhD, professor of orthopedic surgery and director of Upstate’s Musculoskeletal Science Research Center, has been named Distinguished Professor by the SUNY Upstate Board of Trustees. The Distinguished Faculty rank is the highest faculty rank in the state University System, and is conferred upon faculty having achieved national or international prominence and a distinguished reputation within the individual’s chosen field through significant contributions to the research and scholarship, or through artistic performance or achievement in the fine and performing arts.
Dr. Mann is a leading world expert in joint replacement implant fixation and orthopedic biomechanics. His research has contributed significantly to the understanding of the mechanics of joints, joint implants, cement, and their interfaces, and has had a significant translational impact on the clinical practice of total knee and hip replacements. He has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health for more than 20 years, with career funding of more than $18 million, over half as principal investigator. He has published over 130 manuscripts, has an h-index of 42 per Google Scholar and has been cited over 4800 times. His leadership of the Musculoskeletal Science Research Center has contributed to the Department of Orthopedic Surgery ranking among the top 10 departments nationally for NIH funding. His honors include election as a fellow in the Orthopaedic Research Society and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He is a recipient of the Upstate President’s Award for Excellence in Leadership and Research and the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities.
