Arthroscopy
The word ‘arthro’ refers to the joints in the body. Arthroscopy, hence, refers to the process of visualizing the inside of joints using a small fiber-optic video camera. Due to advances in technology, arthroscopy allows surgeons to diagnose and treat a variety of joint problems simultaneously. At Upstate Orthopedics, many of our surgeons routinely use arthroscopic procedures to diagnose and treat different kinds of joint conditions.
Arthroscopic surgery is a minimally invasive procedure performed in our ambulatory surgery center. Being a minimally invasive procedure, arthroscopic surgery has become one of the most widely used surgical treatments for joint problems and soft tissue injuries.
Your surgeon will use a scope with a high-definition camera attached to look inside the joint. Tiny surgical tools can also be attached to the scope to immediately repair any damage, as appropriate. The scope, camera, and tools are inserted through two or three small incisions.
Compared to open surgery, the benefits of an arthroscopic surgery include:
- Smaller incisions
- Less pain and bleeding
- Less risk of infection
- Shorter recovery times
- Minimal or no scarring
Our orthopedic surgeons can perform arthroscopic surgery on practically any joint in the body, including:
- Shoulder Arthroscopy
- Elbow Arthroscopy
- Wrist Arthroscopy
- Hip Arthroscopy
- Knee Arthroscopy
- Ankle Arthroscopy
